The Phantom

Now an ex-policeman, Harry Hole returns to Oslo after running away to Hong Kong to escape from the ghosts that are chasing him. With Oleg, son of his greatest love of all - Rakel, being the prime suspect in the murder of a young junkie, Harry tries to clean his name and search for the real perpetrator.

Without a badge and the Crime Squad to back him up, he tries to solve the case all by himself. Still equipped with the innate attributes of a policeman, Harry submerges himself into the heart of Oslo and the dangerous world of drugs and politics. Unknown that a threat is looming over him and watching his every move, Harry gets caught in the web of secrets, deception and cover-ups. As he tackles them down one by one, he is set to slam unto the unknown and eventually gets a revelation that would make him and Oleg question what matters the most.

Though the Phantom was a bit of a drag up until the half of the book, I was determined to finish it and know the real killer behind the act. As the story progresses, it picks up its pace where Harry is once again tested. Near the end of the book, I got a bit emotional. Somehow knowing that this is the "last" of the Harry Hole series, I was curious to see if Harry does get his "happy peaceful life" at last, but things take a sudden unexpected and unacceptable turn at the end, leaving a cliffhanger, which you would have to read to find out, as I may start spilling the beans if I babble on. In conclusion, I still loved the book.
