For Nothing

Synopsis from Goodreads:
"Undercover cop Alex Vaughn goes deeper than ever into the organized crime family of Buffalo, NY. Motivated by justice and revenge, he seeks out the assassin that laid his friend Jack low.

Professional killer Rafael Rontego traverses the deadly politics of Buffalo’s mafia underbelly. In a city whose winter can be just as deadly as those wielding power, Rontego tries to stay ahead of the game.

Their two worlds collide in this epic thriller that takes the reader on a search for self, justice, and truth."

For Nothing is jam-packed with action and drama. Right from the very beginning, the author made sure to immerse the reader in the whole story in a way that the senses could be involved. Each detail, each millisecond was dissected to make a greater impact. The story was never short of emotions - anger, pain, love, loss, regret - all these were laid down in the book. Although this was my first time to read anything about mafia, I enjoyed the story since the author was so keen not to miss out any essential details for the story to take on life. Though some areas were a bit vague, example, as to the background of Rafael Rontego or the deeper involvement of Jack, still the whole book made sense. I also enjoyed with the way Nicholas Denmon wrote parts of the book, wherein he applied parallelism between some of the main characters, the most evident of which is between Rafael Rontego and Alex Vaughn. I saw the similarities and differences in their lives with the way the author introduced and further wrote about them both. Leaving an unsolved piece of mystery at the end of the book meant that there would be a sequel to this, and I guess I would be picking up more mafia books in the future.
